Why We Started ACHONU Foundation

Our Story
ACHONU Foundation began with a simple belief: when a girl has access to education and the right resources, she can reach places she never imagined.
Our founders care deeply about the girl child. They know how much education matters, and how often cost and circumstance keep girls out of the classroom and out of the rooms where opportunities are created and decisions are made. Some girls are the first in their families with a real shot at finishing school, and then a single missed fee payment, a family setback, or a school that asks for more than a household can give ends it. Nothing about the girl changed. Only the money did.
Girls don't need anyone to hand them their future. They need a platform that gets them into those rooms. That's what ACHONU exists to be.
What we do today
Today, we sponsor girls' education in Lagos, Nigeria, working with vetted local private schools to keep each girl learning. We don't build new schools or run our own classrooms. There are already good schools in these communities. What many families lack is a steady, reliable way to pay for them. We fill that gap, and we stay involved for as long as the girl is with us.
A full year of sponsorship covers what it actually takes to keep a girl in school: tuition, academic monitoring, books and supplies, uniforms, exam fees, and a basic health kit. We sponsor girls between the ages of 6 and 18, and we choose them for their potential, not just their need.
Every sponsorship is built on shared responsibility. Before a girl joins the program, she, her parent or guardian, and her school each sign a Sponsorship and Accountability Agreement. It spells out what ACHONU will provide and what we ask in return, including regular attendance of at least 90 percent and steady academic progress.
More than school fees
Tuition gets a girl through the door. What keeps her moving forward is everything around it, so our work is organized into four programs.
Education Access is the core of what we do: sponsorship, academic tracking, and family accountability so that each girl can stay enrolled from one year to the next.
Financial and Digital Empowerment gives girls the practical skills today's economy demands, from digital literacy and early exposure to AI to entrepreneurship and vocational pathways. We want our graduates to build careers and businesses, not just finish school.
Reproductive and Health Education covers reproductive health, bodily autonomy, mental health, and the prevention of early marriage. A girl who understands her body and her rights is far more likely to stay in school and make decisions on her own terms.
Leadership and Mentorship connects girls with mentors, including women in the diaspora, and builds confidence through public speaking, career guidance, and internship opportunities.
The multiplier model
We think about impact over generations, not just school terms. Our approach is what we call the multiplier model. A girl we sponsor today becomes the mentor, employer, and advocate for the girls who come after her. Graduates come back to guide the next cohort, hire from their communities, and speak up for girls who are where they once were. One sponsorship keeps paying forward long after the school fees are settled.
Our ten-year goal is to sponsor 1,000 high-potential girls and see the large majority of our graduates reach financial independence. It's an ambitious number for an organization our size, and we know it. We also know every one of those thousand girls starts with one.
Who runs ACHONU
ACHONU is led by a small, committed team.
Genesis Ekeh is our Founder and Executive Director. She runs the organization day to day, from choosing partner schools and supporting our scholars to fundraising, reporting, and building partnerships. Her background spans nonprofit grant development, data and compliance work, and community health, and she is completing degrees in health science and nursing. That grounding shapes our health programming and the careful way we handle information about the girls and families we serve.
Davids Achonu serves as President of our Board of Directors, and Alisha Tysor serves as a Board Member. Together, the board sets our direction, approves major decisions, and holds the organization accountable to its mission and to the people who fund it.
We are also growing a team of volunteers who help with outreach and operations, calling supporters, sharing our work, and keeping things running behind the scenes. As the program grows, we plan to add Program Coordinators on the ground in Nigeria, each responsible for a small group of girls, so every scholar has someone checking in on her regularly.
How we're governed
When someone gives to ACHONU, they are trusting us with money meant for a girl's education. We take that seriously, and we've built our structure around it.
ACHONU operates under formal corporate bylaws. Our Board of Directors serves staggered three-year terms, and every director and officer signs a conflict of interest policy each year. No loans are made to directors or officers. Our Treasurer holds custody of funds and signs off on disbursements, and larger expenses and withdrawals are discussed with and approved by the board before any money moves.
Every transaction is documented. We keep receipts and payment records for everything we spend and track our funds carefully, so we can show exactly where each dollar went. As a U.S. public charity, we file annually with the IRS, and our profiles on Candid and Charity Navigator (EIN 42-2339070) are publicly available for anyone who wants to verify our status.
Where we are now
We are a young organization, and we're honest about that. What we have is a clear model, a committed board, strong accountability, and the belief that starting now matters more than waiting to be perfect.
In 2026, we secured our first grant, from ALINEDS, which made our first cohort possible. We started with our first two scholars, both selected, with agreements signed and school underway. Every new sponsor helps us welcome the next girl.
Join us
Supporting a girl through ACHONU is simple. A gift of $10 a month covers one girl's supplies, exam fees, uniform, and health kit for a full year. $90 a month fully sponsors one girl for a school year. $180 a month sponsors two girls, the size of our founding cohort, and $900 a month supports a full cohort of ten, with naming rights. If you believe every girl deserves a seat in the classroom, and a seat in the room, we'd love for you to join us. We started with our first two scholars, and every new sponsor helps us welcome the next girl.
