How a Girl Joins ACHONU: Partner Schools and Clear Commitments Before Enrolment
October 12, 2026 · ACHONU Foundation

When someone asks me how a girl joins ACHONU, I want to answer plainly: her potential matters, and so does being clear about what a sponsorship asks of everyone involved.
Radical transparency starts before a girl enters the programme. Here’s what that means in practice.
A referral through a vetted school
ACHONU partners with vetted local private schools in Nigeria. These are local private schools, not public schools.
Girls are referred through those partner schools. A referral is the beginning of a careful conversation, not a promise of sponsorship. Our approach is built around working with schools already serving these communities and supporting a girl’s education over time. You can read more about that model on our programs page.
What sponsorship means for her school
Sponsorship is not a one-off payment. It covers a girl’s education at her school and comes with academic monitoring, so her progress is followed rather than assumed.
That matters because a family should not have to choose between keeping a girl in school and covering the costs that come with it.
Clear commitments before enrolment
Before enrolment, the Sponsorship & Accountability Agreement is signed by three parties: the student, her guardian, and the school.
The agreement sets out shared expectations, including at least 90% attendance and passing academic performance. These are not details to hide in fine print. They are commitments that help everyone understand what the sponsorship involves and how we will stay accountable to one another.
A guardian’s signature is especially important. A girl should not be expected to carry a long-term education commitment on her own. Her family and school have a role, too.
Sponsorship should never cost an applicant
No applicant should ever pay anyone to receive an ACHONU sponsorship. If anyone asks a family for money in connection with an ACHONU sponsorship, that is a red flag.
Please treat that request seriously. Do not pay. Reach out to ACHONU through our official channels to ask whether the request is genuine. Being clear about this protects families and keeps the process grounded in trust.
A careful beginning, with a longer horizon
Sponsorship is not about making a promise we cannot keep. It is about starting a relationship with clear expectations and a shared purpose: helping a girl continue her education and build toward financial independence.
That ripple can reach beyond one classroom. Over time, a girl who gains skills, choices, and stability can help open doors for others in her community. That is why the details matter, from referral through to making sure a guardian and school understand their commitments.
